Initially it was white text on black version, which taught me that the printing of a newspaper is often not very clear and accurate… so I re-did it with black text on white. I like the black one better personally, and if I have to redo this ad in the future it will need a big change. I also discovered that any image that is underneath the black part is printed as well so that you get a dark shadow version of whatever parts of other images is layered underneath the solid black.

Does anyone know how to get around this? Because cropping the images will be a real pain. I read somewhere that a 40% cyan cover underneath is advisable, but does it remove this shadow?

I have recently been designing and re-designing the DL advertising brochure for work (Hollybank Treetops Adventure). The original design, when we opened, was created by an ad agency in Hobart, but since then I have been doing a lot of the graphic design in-house, so we thought I’d have a go at the DL.

The original design, when we opened, was created by an ad agency in Hobart, but since then I have been doing a lot of the graphic design in-house, so we thought I’d have a go at the DL.

.

The 1st effort was quite good…. The 2nd effort, currently in the proofing stage, is a whole lot better I hope. Check out the results:

.

The 1st effort; front and back.

We had 20 000 of these printed a few weeks ago and they seem to have nearly all dissipated already – I can’t believe it!!

They seemed to be a good bold eye-catching design at the time, but seeing them in the racks in various places… Well, they just don’t seem to jump out so well when only the top 1/3d is showing above another brochure.

So I had another go….

A big change on the front, but not so much on the back.

.

The photographs used in this brochure were taken by my fellow-guides.

.

The latest effort; currently in the proofing stage.

I have tried to put more ‘eye-catching’ images and branding info in the top 1/3d… so hopefully they will stand out better in the DL brochure racks that the Info centers, hotels etc use.

I am looking forward to seeing this printed. Graphic design projects are so new to me and it is still very exciting to see work come back from the printers all boxed and wrapped… To cut the box open and take out that finished product that you have had a part in creating. … it is a wonderful feeling!

The 1st major piece of graphic design I ever did was a poster of 1m X 1.5m in size. It is currently installed in a back-lit sign at the Launceston Airport. It went through several stages before we finally hit on the final layout, mostly because there was no early decision on how many logos to include on it… (Hollybank Treetops is associated with Forestry Tasmania and also Australian Treetop canopy Tours). The result was quite crowded as there was also a second slogan to include.

I finally managed to lose the extra logos and slogan and the result was something I am still quite pleased with. Look for it at the Launceston Airport or check it out here…

I can still remember the days of anticipation while waiting for it to be printed and installed… then finally, driving out to the airport and seeing it for the 1st time off-screen. … live and lit. And the lovely warm glow of satisfaction in a job well done.

(The Photo was Taken By Phil Barratt, Our Operations Manager, so I can’t claim that bit….)
